Guide to Maple Sugaring Demos

By Meghan Friedland, Macaroni KID Greater Danbury, CT and Melissa Cercone, Macaroni KID Fairfield-Trumbull-Shelton, CT February 12, 2024

February and March are the peak maple sugaring months in CT because the nights are typically below freezing and the days are a bit warmer and sunny which is needed in order for the sap to flow from the maple trees. You need the correct type of tree (maple), the right size and age (no smaller than 11 inches in diameter and about 40 years old), and the perfect weather in order for the maple sugaring process to begin which means maple sugaring is unique to our part of the country and needs to be demonstrated and celebrated!

During Maple Season there are many opportunities tour sugarhouses, learn about the origins of the maple syrup-making process, participate in tree tapping demonstrations and sample Connecticut-made sweets!
