Housatonic Valley Waldorf School, located in Newtown, Connecticut, offers authentic, accredited Waldorf education spanning parent-child classes through pre-k, elementary, and middle school, as well as after-school programs, extended care, day summer camp, and many lectures and community events.

While Waldorf Education turned 100 in 2019, we remain the only Waldorf grade school in Connecticut. Our families travel from across Connecticut including Newtown, Bethel, Danbury, Ridgefield, and Redding, CT, as well as Westchester County, New York to attend our independent day school.

At the Housatonic Valley Waldorf School, we believe wisdom begins with wonder. Education is not just a matter of memorization and test taking. Students learn through experience. In addition to being a private elementary and middle school, we also provide opportunities for early childhood development, including play-based preschool and kindergarten programs. While we specialize in child-centered learning during school hours, we also offer extended care and day summer camp opportunities to give kids something fun to do.

SUMMER 2025

HVWS Summer Camp is a day camp for children ages 3-14. Offering two groups—Explorers for 3- to 6-year-olds and Artists for 6- to 14-year-olds—HVWS Summer Camp is the perfect place for natural and exciting summer fun! Led by caring and talented educators, HVWS Summer Camp invites children to enjoy the summer through participating in a variety of fun activities and exploring outside. Our day summer camp is beneficial for working parents as it gives them the ability to place their son or daughter in an exciting, yet educational program rather than finding the right childcare center.

Both programs below run weekly, June 16 through August 8th from 9AM-3PM each day.

Our Explorers (PreK-1st Grade) play with water and mud; participate in group games; enjoy organic gardening; and make arts and crafts related to the theme of the week using natural materials such as wool, beeswax, silk, wood, etc. We follow a simple daily rhythm that provides the campers with a sense of trust and ease while they explore nature, make new friends, and learn new skills.

Our Artists (Grades 1-8) are more capable of challenging themselves physically and socially. The goal of our day summer camp is to provide opportunities that meet our older campers developmentally in a safe, natural environment.

Business Review

“I enjoy how Waldorf focuses on the whole child and experiential learning. I believe Waldorf Education helps foster self-confidence and inner strength in the child. Teaches beyond academic knowledge – teaches valuable life skills and gives a sense of community.”

Grade School Parent

“Some of the things we are interested in are the holistic attitude toward a child’s learning, focusing on development and long-term learning on an emotional, spiritual and intellectual level. We like that children learn through experiencing the outdoors, musical and artistic expression, home responsibilities, and being part of a community.”

Early Childhood Parent

“I love that Waldorf teaches the whole child: mind, body and spirit. I love that you teach in a way that allows all children to excel. I love that you teach an appreciation of nature and the world around us. I love that you’re more than just amazing academics — you bring depth to a child’s life and sense of self.”
