Rain or Shine!

By Meghan Friedland, Publisher/Editor, Macaroni KID Greater Danbury, CT April 20, 2023

The Regional YMCA of Western CT (2 Huckleberry Hill Rd., Brookfield) is hosting the Y’s annual Healthy Kids Day® on Sunday, April 30th from 11am to 2pm, supported by the City of Danbury Health Department. This event is RAIN OR SHINE! This free, annual event features a variety of family-friendly activities to encourage healthy kids, healthy families, and a healthy start to the summer season. It'll feature fun, active play and educational activities, plus open swim, raffles, local vendors, and so much more, all free and open to the community. Don't miss the Family Zumba Half Hour at 11:30am and 12:30pm!

Also, the City of Danbury Health and Human Services Department is providing vaccine education and translation. This means that parents can bring in their children’s vaccination records from anywhere and translators will be onsite to assist during Healthy Kids Day. They will translate their records to US equivalent vaccines and schedule low cost vaccine appointments as needed. Our goal is to ensure access for all children so they are healthy and up to date with their shots in the U.S. for camp and school. For more information about Vaccine Education and Translation, contact Lisa O’Connor at (203) 775-444 x 135 or loconnor@regionalymca.org.

“It is so important for kids to stay active over the summer, both physically and mentally,” says Marie Miszewski, President and CEO, Regional YMCA of Western CT. “At the Y, we believe in providing resources to families to ensure that their children have access to what they need to reach their full potential, no matter the time of year. Healthy Kids Day is a fun, free community-wide event that encourages families to take advantage of all the great summer resources that the Y has to offer.”

In celebration of this annual kick-off to summer, we are sharing a list of five activities that we encourage you to share with your kids. The goal is to have them try something new at the Y by promoting a variety of opportunities to get involved in active play – hopefully, this will inspire a lifetime love of physical and mental activity! Share these opportunities with your children and inspire them to “find their fun” by discovering an activity that they love!

1. Find Your Swimming Skills with Y Swim Lessons
Each year the Y teaches nearly 2,000 swim sessions to children in our community. This helps them find their CONFIDENCE, teaches a lifelong skill and introduces them to lifelong fun. Visit  our  aquatics pages to learn more about Y swim lessons.

2. Find Your Adventure with Y Summer Camp
Summer is a time for kids to explore new things and expand the limits of their imagination. At YMCA Camp Greenknoll or the YMCA Summer Club at Grassy Plain, every day is a new adventure! Having a blast with new friends at summer day camp, many children and teens find their ADVENTURE with the Y. Visit our camp pages to learn more about Y summer camp.

3. Find your Passion with Y Sports
Youth sports are just the start of something bigger– besides teaching healthy living principles, they also teach the value of teamwork, help fuel determination and build character. At the Regional YMCA we have sports programs to help keep children active while igniting their PASSION for something greater. Visit our sports page to learn more about Y sports programs.

4. Find Your Voice with Y Teen Programs
We believe young people have the power to change the world. Our teen and young adult programs are designed to help young people develop the skills and confidence they need to lead positive change in the Greater Danbury Area and beyond. Visit our leadership development page to learn more about Y teen programs.

5. Find Your Curiosity with STEAM Programs
Our S.T.E.A.M. Saturdays program includes activities that help inspire wonder about the world around us. Guiding children to find their CURIOSITY is key to helping them reach their full potential. Visit our youth-teen-and family page to learn more about Y STEAM programs.
