Adventures with Abby: Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary

By Allison Hughes-Randall, Macaroni Kid Danbury Assistant Publisher September 29, 2020

Our Adventures with Abby series continues as we attend various local events from the Macaroni Kid calendar.

Event: Mindful of Monarchs @ Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary, Newtown

Event Description: Join the sanctuary as we explore the wonders of butterflies and how to protect them! The sanctuary's lush meadows are the perfect space to study and marvel at these delicate creatures. Who is ready for a Monarch party at the sanctuary? Monarch tagging, talk with an entomologist learn about perennial pollinator gardening, and backyard beekeeping.

Abby's Log: A little too windy for me, but it was cool. I got to hold a big black bug and got my own milkweed plant. That's what monarchs eat. They had some monarchs that were ready to come out of their chrysalises, which was cool to see. Especially the clearer one. The lady said it would be out by the end of the day. Mom said we can raise some Monarchs next year. I'm going to use what I learned for a girl scout project.

Mom's (practical) point of view: I'm always on the look out for learning experiences for Abby, and it's an added bonus when I get to learn something new, too. Who knew there are actually a couple of generations between the Monarchs that leave here for the south, and the Monarchs that return the next year? Yet they know exactly where to go.

Everything was perfectly social distanced, but family friendly and engaging. The wind, however, made it impossible for the tagging and bug collection, which was disappointing for us both, but that's not anybody's fault. Every program we've gone at the the sanctuary has gone beyond my expectations. Parking is easy, though you have to drive farther than you think you will have to.
