Carvel. Just saying the name brings back memories of my childhood when I spent many Friday nights standing in line with my siblings outside the Carvel shop in our little Long Island town, anxiously awaiting the moment I could take a lick of the vanilla soft-serve cone with rainbow sprinkles that I religiously ordered. There was something special about going out for Carvel. And of course a Carvel ice-cream cake was ALWAYS a hit at just about every kid birthday I had attended. I mean...those "crunchies"...how could a kid resist? My mom would pick up a cake sometimes for no special reason - and I remember even my Dad would ask her, "Does it have those crunchies in the middle? That's the best part!"
So when the opportunity came up for me to review a customized Carvel cake for Macaroni Kid, I jumped at the opportunity. My kids have had Carvel ice cream cake before (and love it!) but...they never got to see their own artwork on top of it... until NOW!
Carvel can accommodate some pretty unique cake requests and strives to allow their guests to personalize their ice cream treats exactly the way they want it, from custom edible image cakes to individual servings. So the other day I had my kids work on a drawing together. Then I emailed a photo of the artwork to the Brewster Carvel store. I called also to make sure they received it and that the quality of my photo was good enough, and it was. Another option is to drop off your artwork for them to scan, which should be on white, 8 1/2 x 11 paper. As an alternative to a free-hand drawing, your kids can color in a template. Yesterday afternoon I picked up our customized cake from Carvel in Brewster and I can't wait to show the kids! It came out really cute, didn't it? What a great memory we'll have for this year's Mother's Day celebration. Of course kids' artwork can be fun to use on a cake for other special occasions as well -- like Father's Day, Grandparent Birthdays, Graduations, etc. It was so fun and easy to do! I have a feeling there will be more cakes like this in our future!
To order your cake, you can contact one of these locations in our area. Carvel locations generally say they need 36 hours/3 days to turn around a personalized cake but some (like the Brewster location) say they can turn it around sooner than that. Just call ahead to confirm before you send or bring in your artwork.
