My daughters love to help me in the kitchen. Whether I'm baking cookies, whipping up pancakes or chopping veggies for a salad, they want in on the action. I keep their kiddie aprons handy and let them use kid-safe utensils while assisting me. While the kitchen does get more messy when working with the kids, cooking with kids can be a very educational and fun experience. Plus, most moms would agree that when a child helps to prepare her food, she is more likely to actually try it.
If you have a child who loves to cook, then you’ll want to check out the Kids Cooking Camp being offered this Summer by Daily Fare (the “Down to Earth Gourmet to Go” restaurant located in the Bethel Train Station). Chef Robin Grubard (a former culinary college instructor who is also a parent of two young children) helps kids build skills, creativity and confidence in the kitchen. The classes are age-appropriate, fully supervised and include fun activities. Students learn the basics of nutrition, food preparation, creative exploration of ingredients and cooking styles, food safety, culinary history, ethnic foods and their cultures…and much more.
Below is the class schedule by age group. You can save by signing up for the entire series, although you are also able to pay per class if that suits your schedule better.
Local mom Allison says, "Mason and Maddie truly enjoyed learning how to cook for themselves. A highlight after class was to bring home their dish (or sometimes what was left of it :) and have mom and dad try it. They were thrilled and proud to share their creations. They would tell us all the ingredients and explain each step of the process. I can tell you to this day, Maddie knows 3 different dishes using phyllo dough and Mason asked for and was given a crepe pan by his grandmother. Many a crepe and baklava have graced our table. Our thanks go to Robin for instilling in our children a love of cooking and the temerity to try many new and different foods. Bon Appetit!"
