Pet Adoption Corner: Newtown Cat SOS

From Canine Advocates of Newtown

By Cari-ann Tyszka, Contributing Writer September 19, 2013
On Friday, August 23rd, the Newtown Animal Shelter along with the Newtown Police Department, responded to an anonymous phone call stating that there were some cats to be found at an abandoned home on Castle Hill Road. Upon investigation, they found a thin blue nylon carrier, barely large enough to hold a Cocker Spaniel, containing 12 cats! They ranged in age from just a few months to several years old and their coloring ran nearly the entire spectrum of feline fashion - from black, black & white, orange, grey tiger striped, and even a tortoise shell. Importantly, none of them were feral - all had been socialized to a remarkable extent. It quickly became apparent that someone could not care for these cats and, while not wanting to take personal responsibility, nonetheless thought enough of them to bundle them up, place a phone call, and hope that the community at large would step up to the plate. Well, step up they did, and the Brian J. Silverlieb Animal Care and Control Center hit a home run! They now have the cats safely housed in their state of the art facility located on Old Farm Road and have begun administering their professional, yet highly personal, attention and care. While not truly neglected, all of the cats are still are in need of medical attention to one extent or another ranging from caring for fleas, scabs, intestinal parasites, and, most importantly, neutering & spaying. It should be emphasized that the Animal Control Center, while new and quite comfy, was never intended for this dramatic influx of needy animals. Quite simply stated, they are very nearly overwhelmed and could use as much support from the good citizens of Newtown and the surrounding communities as possible. All of these cats are available for adoption and it is hoped that many, if not all, will find new homes. If you have a wee bit of room in your home (not to mention your heart) please give them a call and ask to see these needy cats today (203) 426-6900.
