What to Expect During Your Visit

The museum is situated on the old site for the Danbury railroad station (1903-1993; restored as a museum in 1995), so as soon as you walk in and take in the surroundings, you feel as though you’re stepping back in time. Much of the décor is reminiscent of commuter life in the 1950’s and 60’s while members of the staff are on hand to tell tales of the past, breathing life into the historic photos on the walls and carefully displayed artifacts.

The rail yard is a whopping 6 acres with trains such as the popular Boston & Maine 1455 Steam Engine to hop on and explore. For $9 per person (under 2 are free), you can hop on a vintage train for a quick ride to a pumpkin patch. Visitors will also have a ride on the turntable. In addition to a free pumpkin, the visit includes free cider and cookies for the kids!

Inside the museum, there are several model trains on display (behind glass) that can be activated by you or your child by pressing a button. One of the models even has a train led by Thomas himself. There is also a fun play area with several train toys and playtables to further entertain the little ones. On your way out, you won’t want to miss the small gift shop which has lots of books and train memorabilia plus small reasonably priced souvenirs for children.
